So first things first, it’s probably not a good idea to take a suitcase on a gap year. We’ve all been there during a city breaks. Your trying to get from JFK to New York City on the tube with your extra large suitcase ready for all the clothes and souvenirs your going to fetch home (yes that was us… twice) it’s a struggle. It’s fine taking a suitcase on a holiday or city break but backpacking around Asia where there is barely any pavements and the roads are mud, not a great idea so get yourself a back pack to save the hassle.
I’m only going to touch on backpacks slightly as josh is going to write a comparison on the best backpacks to choose from and a more in depth review.
Now the type of backpack you need will all depend on how long your going on your trip for, as our trip is a year long we both opted for the Fairview and Farpoint Osprey 70L bags. They both come with a detachable day bags which is really handy when for your plane journeys and days out either on the beach or hiking.

If you are going on a much shorter trip than ours then I would suggest a 40 or 50L as you won’t need as many things as we do. The benefit to also having a smaller bag is that you can take it on the plane as hand luggage whereas our bags have to go in the hold each time.
The key to picking a good bag is research, read other people’s reviews. Reviews will give you honest opinions about a product and then let you be the judge of whether that is something which you are looking for in a product.
Another thing to add is always buy a rain cover for your bag. We got the ones that specifically went with our bags however you don’t have to, just make sure they are the correct size to fit. We’ve only had to use them once and they fold into a compact case so we forget there even in our luggage sometimes.
Keep an eye out for josh’s in depth review on different brands of bags to decide which is the best for you.
